More Than Metal: Why Horses Wear Racing Plates

One of the most common questions new racing fans ask is, "Why do racehorses wear horseshoes?"

The answer is simple: protection, traction, and performance.

A horse's hoof is incredibly strong, but it also absorbs tremendous force. During a race, a Thoroughbred can place thousands of pounds of pressure on each hoof with every stride. Racing plates help protect the hoof from excessive wear while providing the grip needed to accelerate, corner, and safely handle different track surfaces.

Unlike the heavy horseshoes you might see on a farm horse, racehorses wear lightweight aluminum racing plates. These plates are designed to be as light as possible while still offering protection. Every ounce matters when a horse is traveling at nearly 40 miles per hour.

Shoes are not one-size-fits-all.

Farriers work closely with trainers and veterinarians to customize each horse's footwear. Factors like hoof shape, stride, conformation, track condition, and even weather can influence the type of shoe a horse wears. A horse racing on a muddy track may require a different setup than one competing on a fast, dry surface.

Proper shoeing is about much more than speed—it's about keeping horses sound. Balanced feet allow horses to move efficiently, reduce unnecessary stress on joints and tendons, and help prevent injuries over the course of a racing season.

It's easy to overlook what's beneath a racehorse.

But every successful stride begins with healthy feet. Behind every winning performance is not only a talented horse and skilled trainer, but also an experienced farrier ensuring that each hoof is prepared for the demands of race day.
