Our Claiming Strategy:

Our claiming strategy focuses on lightly raced 3, 4, and 5 year-old— preferably New York-bred—horses that are still early in their careers and often just beginning to reach their physical and competitive peak. At this stage, many horses are still developing, creating a valuable opportunity to acquire runners who have already demonstrated ability but still possess meaningful upside.

In many cases, these are the same horses we initially identified at auction as yearlings or 2-year-olds in training. Well-bred New York-breds can command very strong prices in the sales ring, sometimes placing the most appealing prospects beyond a practical purchase range. By allowing these horses to make a few starts, the racetrack provides valuable information—revealing soundness, running style, competitiveness, and overall racing aptitude before we step in.

The claiming game also presents unique strategic opportunities. At times, connections will drop a horse in class to place it in a softer spot with the goal of securing a purse while the horse is particularly sharp. Even if doing so risks losing the horse through a claim, a single purse at New York tracks—where state-bred races offer strong incentives—can justify that decision.

Another dynamic in the marketplace is that some barns are focused almost exclusively on identifying potential Derby-trail prospects. Horses that do not immediately show graded-stakes or classic potential are often moved along quickly. While those horses may not fit a Kentucky Derby campaign, they can still be extremely capable racehorses—creating attractive value opportunities for disciplined claiming operations.

For this reason, evaluating claiming races requires looking beyond the claiming price alone. A class drop does not always signal declining form; in many cases it simply reflects placement strategy, stable objectives, or shifting goals within a barn. Understanding these nuances is where careful analysis and disciplined acquisition strategy come into play.
